Our Team

We are a multidisciplinary student team, predominantly composed of students in the Civil, Mining and Geological engineering programs. Our members range from first-year students to Graduate students, with many participating in the co-op program alongside their studies. While we strive to build the clubs membership and network, our diverse experiences provide understanding on the importance of the ability for this club to excel.

Name: Andrew Mitchell

Role: Club Treasurer

Biography: I am a professional geotechnical engineer with a focus on geological hazards. I am currently a PhD student in the Geological Engineering program at UBC studying rapid landslide runout using probabilistic methods. I have obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the U of A and my Master’s degree in Geological Engineering from UBC. Between degrees, I have worked as a consulting engineer, with six years full-time experience in a variety of projects for transportation, municipal, hydroelectric, oil and gas, forestry and mining clients, and I am continuing to consult part-time during my PhD. I am also a member of the VGS and CGS, and I am a member of the CGS geohazards committee.

Name: Thushara Jayasinghe

Role: Graduate Student Representative

Biography: I’m a second-year PhD student (Civil Engineering) at UBC who is passionate and conducting research in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. I completed my Bachelors in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2017. I joined UBC to work and collaborate with researchers from different disciplines to develop new skills and solve new challenges. I wish to pursue a research-based academic career that will allow me to use my strengths to achieve my goals through activities that I enjoy doing.

Name: Yulia Hung

Role: Marketing Representative

Biography:  I’m a second-year geological engineering student and am also currently involved in the concrete canoe UBC design team (mix design). I joined CGS’s student chapter in hopes of contributing to raising awareness of geotechnical engineering and bringing students opportunities to connect with the industry. My previous experience in sales management and medical administration has provided me with a base to build upon for the sponsorship lead position. I am fascinated by geohazard assessments and mitigations which motivated me to start my career in geotechnical engineering. I hope to inspire students in geological, civil, and mining engineering through collaboration with CGS and geotechnical companies.

Biography: I am a geological engineering student currently in my 5th year of study at UBC. I have geotechnical field and laboratory experience working as a soil lab technician and student engineer at various firms. I love to do hands-on work in the field. I joined CGS recently and I knew I had to get involved with the organization of the society, and I'm glad I volunteered! By working with CGS, I hope that I can grow interest and awareness in geotechnical engineering throughout UBC during my time here!
